La eye strain end of the day has become so commonplace that it is no longer noticed. Eight hours'screen, constant artificial light, air dried out by air conditioning or heating: the eyes finish the day having worked hard and rested very little. The interesting question is not how to make it through to the evening, but what the following night actually allows us to recover.
Why do eyes get tired in front of a screen?
In short
In front of a screen, the gaze remains fixed at a constant distance and blinking becomes less frequent, because attention suspends this reflex. The surface of the eye is therefore less often remoistened, over long periods, in air that is often dry. End-of-day eye strain stems from this combination, rather than from the screen itself.
Three mechanisms combine, and none of them is spectacular taken in isolation. The first is the fixation a screen imposes a single working distance, held for hours on end, whereas the natural gaze constantly shifts focus. The muscles that adjust the focus remain in a working position, not at rest.
The second is the blink. It is a reflex, and it has a precise function: to spread the tear film over the surface of the eye and renew it. In front of a screen, it clearly becomes scarcer, because attention suspends it without one realising.
The third is the'environment. Air conditioning, heating, and draughts in an open-plan office: these conditions accelerate the evaporation of the tear film at the precise moment it is renewed least often. This explains why the exact same day is more tiring in winter or in an air-conditioned office.
What the day leaves behind at bedtime
At the end of the day, the descriptions sound the same: heavy eyes, an increased sensitivity to light, and sometimes blurred vision in the evening. These are feelings of discomfort, and they set in over the course of the week rather than in a single day.
The usual reflex is to act during during the day: breaks, brightness adjustments, screen distance, indirect lighting. All of these are helpful, but these measures reduce the load without creating true rest time. A twenty-second break interrupts the fixation, it does not restore anything.
Real eye rest happens at night: seven or eight hours with eyelids closed, the surface of the eye protected from the surrounding air, and no light. It is the only long window of the day, and the easiest one to ruin unintentionally.
At night, the only really long window of rest
Two things are at play there, independent of each other.
The darkness, which is never complete
An ordinary bedroom is not dark. Internet router standby light, street lamp between the curtains, phone on charge, backlit alarm clock: these sources are weak but constant, and complete darkness is what allows melatonin secretion to happen without interruption. That is the primary role of a sleep mask, and you notice it from the very first night.
Practical point: an eye mask that lets light in down the sides of the nose loses most of its effectiveness, regardless of the quality of the fabric. Total darkness is judged by the seal against the face.
The infrared that the body already emits
The second mechanism is less well-known. Your body constantly emits heat in the form of far-infrared radiation, and the face, which has a rich blood supply, emits a lot of it. A textile carrying a metal oxide film absorbs this infrared radiation and re-emits it towards the skin instead of letting it dissipate. This is the property that physicists call emissivity: a material that absorbs well also re-emits well. Nothing is created in the process; the energy is redistributed, not added. This far-infrared does not heat. It contributes to local microcirculation via the eNOS enzyme, which releases nitric oxide. This is a slow effect that requires prolonged exposure, which is why the relevant format is a mask worn all night, not a session device. None of these levers replace the others. They do not act at the same time, and it is by looking at them together that we see what is missing from most routines.

The first four levers relate to load management. The last two are the only ones that occupy a long window. A routine that only works during the day leaves out the seven most available hours.
What the study on 20 participants shows
The Eclipse sleep mask was the subject of a study conducted by the Vision Sciences Institute. The first thing to look at isn't the result, it's the method: the participants were not asked about how they felt, two parameters were measured.

Twenty people, an advanced age group, sixty days, and a piece of work that is not published in a peer-reviewed journal. This provides a direction, it does not demonstrate, and it says nothing about the result you will obtain.
What these two parameters measure. Blinking, as we have seen, spreads and renews the tear film. The Meibomian glands, located within the thickness of the eyelid, produce the oily layer of this film, the one that slows down its evaporation between blinks. These are measurements, not statements.
A detail that matters when working on a screen. A blinking rate is never read on its own; it is read in the context of its situation. In front of a screen, its decrease comes from attention suspending the reflex, and the surface is then re-humidified less often. At rest, away from any screen, a high rate rather indicates a surface that needs to be re-humidified often. The same figure therefore does not tell the same story in the two situations.
The p-value, in a single sentence. A $p$ value of less than 0.001 simply means: in this group, a discrepancy of this magnitude had virtually no chance of arising by chance. It says nothing about the size of the effect, nor about its generalisability to a younger population.
Thirty nights to judge: the protocol
A study of twenty people does not concern you directly. The only data that relates to you is the one you collect, and it requires regularity rather than equipment.
- Note your starting point for a week. Each evening, a rating from 1 to 10 on the comfort of your eyes. It is subjective, and that is precisely what interests you.
- Add an objective measure if you have one. On a smartwatch, nocturnal heart rate variability and resting heart rate are the two most accessible indicators of the quality of a night's sleep.
- Wear the mask for thirty consecutive nights. This is the recommended minimum duration, and consistency matters more than the length of each night.
- Do not change anything else. Schedules, caffeine, evening exercise: if three variables change together, no conclusion is possible.
- Compare the averages, not the days. One bad night doesn't mean anything. Fourteen nights against fourteen nights, yes.
This protocol gives you the means to prove us wrong. If nothing changes over thirty nights even though the conditions have been met, the response is individual, and that is information worth more than an impression.
Frequently asked questions
Is a sleep mask any use if my bedroom is already dark?
An ordinary bedroom is rarely black: appliance standby lights, streetlights, a charging screen. The mask removes these residual sources and maintains darkness if you open your eyes at night or if someone turns the light on. It is also the only format that works when travelling.
Does an infrared mask heat up during the night?
No. Far infrared in the 3 to 20 micrometre band is not heating infrared, and the textile consumes no energy. It should not be confused with heated or diode masks, which are active devices, operate in short sessions and belong to another product category.
How long does it take before you can observe something?
The darkness is immediate, from the very first night. As for the rest, the study cited above looked at 60 days of night-time use: we recommend at least thirty consecutive nights before judging.
Can it be used for an office nap?
Yes. A twenty-to-thirty-minute power nap benefits most from complete darkness, which is immediate. The return of infrared radiation implies long exposure: the night remains the main window.
Does it need to be plugged in, like an earthing mattress overlay?
