Infrared and recovery: what you need to know

Used for a long time in the world of sport and wellness, infrared rays are intriguing. Here is what they are, how IAKOTA uses them, and what can honestly be said about them.

What are infrared rays

Infra-red radiation is invisible to the naked eye, located just beyond the red end of the light spectrum. All warm bodies emit it, including the human body: this is indeed what thermal cameras detect. What interests us here is far infra-red, which is associated with a gentle sensation of warmth. It is found in numerous wellness practices, from infra-red saunas to so-called technical textiles.

The IAKOTA approach: think, don't emit

That is an important distinction and it changes everything. The mattress topper and IAKOTA sleep masks emit nothing: they think towards the body the infrared radiation it naturally produces. This is the principle behind Minoxis technology. The practical consequence is that the device is entirely passive. No electronics, no plug-in required for this function, no power source, no active substance. Nothing to recharge, nothing to consume.
A useful clarification. Reflecting the body's infrared rays does not mean heating. The desired sensation is that of an enveloping thermal comfort, not an added heat source.

What can be expected from it

Let's stick to the facts: IAKOTA designs wellness products, not medical devices. We therefore make no claims to treat, relieve or cure anything. What our users most often describe is:
  • A feeling of comfort at bedtime, cosy and pleasant.
  • A sense of relaxation of the body, ideal for letting go at the end of the day.
  • A feeling of better recovery upon waking, particularly after busy periods.
  • Nights experienced as more comfortable, night after night.
These reviews are impressions, subjective by nature and varying from one person to another. That is also what makes them interesting: sleep comfort is judged above all through use.

What our measurements show

Beyond feelings, we wanted to measure. In 2024, a pilot study was conducted at the CNEA in Font-Romeu involving 27 trail running athletes, with monitoring of recovery after exertion sessions.

of RMSSD at 48 hours in the fitted group, compared to -25 % in the placebo group. RMSSD is a marker of parasympathetic nervous system activity, the one that governs rest.

Pilot study, small sample size, specific sporting context. It indicates a direction, not definitive proof.
What these figures do not say. This is a pilot study and we do not present it as anything else. A doctoral thesis is underway at the CNEA until 2028 to take up this work on a larger population. We will publish the results whatever they may be.

Why the night

Seven to eight hours motionless, skin against textile: the night is the only period of the day when long, stable contact is possible without changing one's habits. It is also the time when the body dedicates the most resources to its rest. This is what makes the practice sustainable over time.

Infrared is not a magic wand, and we would refrain from claiming it is. What IAKOTA offers is simpler: a passive physical mechanism, integrated into your bedding, to support your nights and your recovery, with no extra effort.
