The role of microcirculation in recovery
Often overlooked, microcirculation is nonetheless at the heart of what happens in muscles between workouts. Here is an explanation, along with practical ways to look after it.
What is the microcirculation
Microcirculation refers to the blood that flows through the body's smallest vessels: capillaries, arterioles and venules. It is at this level that exchanges of oxygen, nutrients and waste take place between the blood and the tissues. In other words, the large arteries do the transporting, and the microcirculation does the delivery. It is the final mile, the one that actually reaches the muscle fibres.Why recovery matters
- The supply of oxygen and nutrients muscles need amino acids, carbohydrates and oxygen to repair themselves after exercise. It is microcirculation that brings them to the cells.
- The removal of metabolic waste following intense exertion, the body produces lactate and carbon dioxide. Good circulation helps to clear them.
- The repair work circulation also transports the cells involved in repair processes to the areas under stress.
Microcirculation and performance
From a sports perspective, the challenge is simple. The better the muscles are fuelled during exercise, the more comfortable the endurance. And the better they are cleared afterwards, the easier the recovery.
